Atalanta will host Valencia

We are heading to the Stadio San Siro where on Wednesday Atalanta will host Valencia in a first 1/8-finals game from the Champions League. Let’s preview this fixture in our Champions League predictions that are about to follow.

Atalanta are an interesting case because this is their first participation in the Champions League. The Italians didn’t start their campaign in the group stage very well, losing their first three matches. We all thought that they will leave the competition, but they managed to progress with 7 points in their next three matches.

Because of the great work of the manager Gian Piero Gasperini, Atalanta became one of the best teams in the Serie A in the last few years. They don’t have the budget or the stars of clubs like Juventus and Inter Milan, but their biggest advantage is the team effort and their passion. It’d be really interesting to see what Atalanta can do in the knockout phase of the Champions League. Many people didn’t expect that they could be here now.

Valencia qualified for the 1/8-finals of the Champions League literally in their last game in the group stage when they beat Ajax in Amsterdam and managed to overtake the Dutch giants. When Rodrigo put the ball in the net, this was probably one of the most important goals for Valencia in the last decade. Surely it secured the club pretty good money.

For Valencia the beginning of the season was not easy as their manager Marcelino left after some disagreement with the board. For the new coach Albert Celades it was not easy to replace him, but with time Celades managed to gel with the team and now they have positive results.

In these Champions League predictions we believe that this tie between Atalanta and Valencia is totally unpredictable. Both teams are not among the biggest clubs on the continent, but they are good enough to win and progress in the competition. It’s going to be interesting to watch these two legs.
