Deportivo Alaves’ new manager Asier Garitano debuted with a win for the club. In the first round Alaves hosted Levante at the Estadio de Mendizorroza and enjoyed a 1-0 win. The only goal was scored soon after the halftime break when Aleix Vidal provided to ball to Joselu, who put it past Aitor Fernandez. Espanyol started the new season in a negative say, suffering a 0-2 defeat at home against Sevilla. The Catalans tried to show their best face against the Andalusians, but the visitors took the win with goals from Regulion and Nolito.
During the week Espanyol had a game in Europa League as well, which finished much better for them. Los Pericos faced the Ukrainian side Zorya at home and enjoyed a 3-1 in a first playoff game between these two sides. Zorya opened the score with a goal from Vladyslav Kochergin, but after the halftime break Espanyol turned it around with three goals in their favour.
